Releasing her Archive

returning to past dances to revitalize corporeal expression in the present

Releasing the Archive (2014–2020) was a research project led by Carol Brown with Thomas Kampe. In recreating the exiled dance practices of Austrian choreographer Gertrud Bodenwieser, we explored how the body can function as a living archive, connecting past dance movements, specifically from the 1919–1938 Vienna era, to contemporary performance. This project included the screen dancework, 'Releasing Her Archive' and the performance 'Lost + Found [Dances of Exile]' for Q Theatre (2017) with New Zealand Dance Company and Maryam Bagheri Nesami and Karina Campbell.
